South Cambridgeshire has no town-centre station, but it has something better: six village stations on two London lines, plus Cambridge’s fast trains a park and ride away. On the western side, Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton feed Great Northern services to King’s Cross, and at peak that journey is quicker than most Zone 5 commutes. On the eastern side, Whittlesford Parkway and Shelford sit on Greater Anglia’s Liverpool Street line, and Waterbeach runs direct to King’s Cross from the north. Every time and fare below was checked against the National Rail timetable via traintimes.org.uk in August 2026, using the Monday timetable; always confirm on the day you travel.
The King’s Cross line: Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton
The three Royston-line villages share the same trains, a few minutes apart. At peak the service is half-hourly and fast: on the Monday timetable the 08:12 from Meldreth reaches King’s Cross at 09:03, 51 minutes, calling Shepreth (55 minutes) and Foxton (57 minutes) on the same run pattern. Off-peak the direct train drops to hourly and slows to about 1h13 to 1h19, though changing at Hitchin onto Thameslink gets you to St Pancras in just over an hour for most of the day.

- Last direct back: the 23:48 from King’s Cross, into Meldreth at 00:58.
The Liverpool Street line: Whittlesford Parkway and Shelford
Whittlesford Parkway, by the A505 south of Sawston with its own parking, is the district’s Liverpool Street railhead: two trains an hour off-peak, the faster of them doing the run in 1h03, and a string of morning-peak departures (07:58, 08:18, 08:30, 08:59) taking 1h13 to 1h18. The first London train on a Monday is the 04:57, arriving 06:06; the last direct back leaves Liverpool Street at 22:58.
Shelford is the quieter option: an hourly direct train off-peak, leaving at 25 past and taking 1h17. From either station, King’s Cross means one change at Cambridge.
Waterbeach: direct to King’s Cross from the north
Waterbeach keeps a genuinely useful service for a village station: roughly two direct King’s Cross trains an hour, taking 1h01 on the best off-peak runs and 1h11 to 1h13 in the morning peak. The first Monday train is the 05:30 (King’s Cross 06:37); the last direct back is the 23:30. A new, bigger Waterbeach station is due to start construction in autumn 2026 to serve the new town, opening by summer 2028; the current station stays open until then.
Or drive to Cambridge for the 50-minute non-stops
For the villages without a station, the fastest option is often Cambridge itself: non-stop trains to King’s Cross every half hour, taking 50 minutes, plus direct Thameslink trains to St Pancras in about 1h08. The first Monday departure is at 04:51 and the last back leaves King’s Cross at 23:51. Trumpington and Milton park and ride sites put the station within reach of the whole district, with parking free for up to 18 hours.

The stand-out is Meldreth’s £21.90 Super Off-Peak Day Return: under £11 each way to London on the quietest trains. Foxton and Shepreth fares sit within about £3 of Meldreth’s, and Waterbeach’s Anytime Day Return is £55.00 with an Off-Peak Day Return at £34.20.

- Meldreth: £157.00 a week, £602.90 a month, £6,280 a year (£6,600 routed via Thameslink; £8,060 with Travelcard).
- Cambridge: £162.40 a week, £623.70 a month, £6,496 a year on any permitted route, or £5,952 restricted to Greater Anglia only.
Whittlesford Parkway is the cheapest annual season in the district, and Cambridge’s Greater Anglia-only season matches it, which surprises people: the premium is for the fast King’s Cross trains, not for London itself.
